Taking a Step Forward

StepAt the end of May, I had the opportunity once again to teach at ICJ Hamburg. Before the evening service, we had the Brewer family over for a late lunch and some fellowship. How great it was to get connected once again with this missionary family here in Hamburg and encourage one another. After our meal, Rebecca asked them a question that they in turn asked us. “What is it right now that you are trusting the Lord for?” Although there were a few things that came to our minds immediately in regards to the future church plant, I really had to think over this question some more.

Later in the evening, as we came together with the others at ICJ, I had a conversation with Buddy Brewer’s assistant, Ulrich, that really encouraged me. He encouraged me to take the steps forward in teaching in the German language. I began to ask him many questions and what specific steps he took in the past. After hearing from him, I simply asked that he would pray for me in regard to this topic. Now this has been a desire on my heart for a few years now, but I didn’t believe that I was ready for this step quite yet. Having conversations is one thing, but teaching is quite another thing. After this conversation with Ulrich, I began to think about it a lot more and began to consider what steps I would need to take. I had around three weeks until I would be teaching at LiveStone Chapel in Münster and so this was really something to begin to pray about and move forward in.

Some days later, we had Chris Waldrop and Edmund Coronel Jr. here in Hamburg for a few days to pray over the city with us. During their stay I began to ask Chris what steps he took to teach in the German language and then I asked him if it would be alright with him if I made my first step with his congregation in the following weeks at LiveStone Chapel. He said that he was okay with it and so I began to take the necessary steps. First things first, I would need my notes to be translated. I talked about it with Janos and Anja and asked if one of them would be willing to translate my notes, so that I would have some time to look over them (a lot) and prepare. Secondly, I took the advice from Ulrich and I asked many different people to be praying for me as I made this step, because prayer support is so important. Last of all, I began to read and pray over my notes many times. A few days prior to the teaching date, Buddy wrote me a message and reminded me of some very key verses…

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:1-5 NKJV)

On Sunday, June 16th, I made my first step in teaching in the German language. God was faithful! Going to continue to move forward in faith…

So now we in turn ask you…

“What is it right now that you are trusting the Lord for?”
